Mirror Armature animation

It would be cool, if I don’t have to make two animations, when something can be done in both directions, like a left and right step, turning left or right, or basically any asymmetrical animation, I don’t want to play only the one way.
Blender itself does not seem to support it and also the play method of armature doesn’t support it.
If not possible yet, it would still be cool. Unity also supports mirroring of animations.

I could see this working. It could be done as a dropdown on the “play action” node to mirror on an X axis/ Y axis, Z axis or not at all.

I’m using a script for this now. It would be nice, if it works without.
Does it only mirror the animation, not the whole rig?
